1. How do you feel about your college acceptance? Coming from a completely different (Russian) culture it was very stressful for me to adapt to all the new requirements and expectations. At the beginning of my application process (January 2020), I felt like I was completely lost and I didn’t believe in myself. Now that I have applied to many prestigious colleges and now that I am accepted I can confidently say that I am proud of myself, my works, and my patience.
2. What was the most difficult aspect of your portfolio preparation?
The most challenging part for me was the idea stretch. I could never really work on my process book. I prefer working on the actual works, rather than organizing my ideas.
3. When did you start the portfolio class, and how did you prepare your portfolio?
I began the portfolio classes in January 2020. I worked very hard because I knew how much effort I need to put into this part of the application process. As I was not attending the portfolio prep classes since my freshman year and I came as a junior I did not have much time left. During the summer I came every single day for more than 5 hours and just drew.
4. What is your favorite artwork that you made? As any other artist, I cannot name my favorite work, but I really enjoyed my last observational drawing.
5. Do you have any advice for the new portfolio students?
I recommend starting your portfolio as soon as possible so that before the first deadline you do not rush. Also, it is best to apply as an early action so that you have your answers earlier. Really, just enjoy the process and do what you like. Ask for help if you are not sure about something, but always remember that it is your work and you have the last word on everything.
6. Tell us your thoughts about NYSA! I chose NYSA because when I first stepped into the studio it inspired me and I wanted to start classes immediately. The spirit of the studio is indescribable, people who teach and learn here are very creative creatures and it is such a pleasure to work and create at New York Schools of Arts.
