1. How do you feel about your college acceptance?

I was so surprised and excited! I didn’t expect that many schools would give me admission.

2. How did you find your inspiration?

I’m Chinese and I am very attracted to traditional Chinese stuff. I get inspiration from going through the pictures or video of them and trying to combine them to create my ideas. As you can see I have a lot of Chinese elements in my works.

3. What was the most difficult aspect of your portfolio preparation?

Probably everything. First I don’t know what major I want to do, I tried to exclude what I don’t like and finally decided to be illustration. Then I need to figure out ideas for the artworks, and I need to get some ideas out of my poor brain. Every time I was scared to show my ideas to teachers because I had no confidence. Lastly, the description of the artworks, I was not very clear about what I was thinking when I drew those drawings. Mostly I drew them with my six senses. Thanks to the teachers that helped me to get my portfolio done.

4. What is your favorite artwork that you made?

Can’t tell which because I like them all! Like the “Chinese Opera '' I made for the Parsons challenge. I mixed a lot of Chinese elements in this piece. I also tried a new technique like crochet, and I am glad it turned out great. When I was working on this artwork, I got a lot of help from NYSA’s teachers Kiara and Ann, they helped me figure out how I wanted the piece to look like and guided me through the process of filming. Thanks for their help! And my digital works, thanks to my digital class teacher Tory ,who helped me fix my bad drawings and encouraged me.

5. Do you have any advice for the new portfolio students?

Be Ready to be kicked out? Just kidding, but be prepared and finish homework! I know working on the portfolio and finishing homework is hard, But just give some time each day and trust yourself! As KJ said,“colleges don’t care about your excuse on finished nothing.”(definitely not me hearing this a lot.
